Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) - 1 year

The 1-Year Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) is a pre-sea training program approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) and affiliated with the Indian Maritime University (IMU).

This course serves as the first step toward a rewarding career as a Deck Officer in the Merchant Navy. Upon successful completion, cadets are awarded a Pre-Sea Completion Certificate and become eligible to join a ship as a Deck Cadet.

Course Structure

The pre-sea training consists of two semesters, each spanning six months. During this phase, cadets undergo rigorous academic and practical training in navigation, seamanship, marine safety, and ship operations.

After completing the pre-sea phase, cadets must undergo the Structured Shipboard Training Programme (SSTP) — an 18-month onboard training divided into three semesters (III, IV, and V), each approximately six months long.

During onboard training, cadets:

  • Gain hands-on experience in real ship operations.
  • Learn practical navigation, maintenance, and cargo handling.
  • Receive a stipend, along with free boarding and lodging.
